- We look at each day in the old Japanese calendar and show the most favoured ones first, with the reason.
What the old calendar looks at
- Rokuyo (六曜): a cycle of six days. Taian is the most favoured, Tomobiki, Senshō and Senbu are mild, Shakkō is favoured only around noon, and Butsumetsu is a day to rest.
- Tenshabi (天赦日): “the day heaven forgives”, the most auspicious day of the year. It comes only five or six times a year.
- Ichiryū-manbai (一粒万倍日): “one grain becomes ten thousand”. Good for beginnings, but old advice says not to begin a loan on it.
- Day of the Tiger (寅の日): the tiger goes far and returns, so it favours travel and money, but many avoid it for weddings.
- Tsuchinoto-mi (己巳の日): the day of the goddess Benzaiten, favoured for money and the arts.
Each purpose gives these a different weight. For example, a wedding favours Taian and avoids Butsumetsu and Tiger days, while a trip favours Tiger days.
